In May 2025, Denise Portfolio, originally from Denver (Colorado, USA), fulfilled a lifelong dream: to visit her great-grandfather’s homeland and rediscover a deep connection with the land and community of Schiavi di Abruzzo. An exciting journey, enriched by the presence of her dear friends and the warm welcome of the inhabitants, which led her to discover not only her family origins, but also a part of herself that she did not know she had lost. In her words, Denise recounts with sincerity and gratitude every moment of this experience, which fully embodies the spirit of the Italea Abruzzo project: a bridge between Italian communities and the descendants of emigrants around the world.

My journey to rediscover our ancestral home has been a dream carried in my heart for many years—one I was finally able to realize at the age of 70. It was a beautiful, emotional experience that I will never forget, made even more special by the love and support of my dear friends Tamy, Holly, and Haley, who traveled with me and made this dream come true. As we drove through the stunning countryside toward Schiavi, the beauty of the land took my breath away. But the true magic began when we arrived.

From the very first moment, we were met with extraordinary warmth and kindness from the people of Schiavi. I felt it in my heart and soul—I was home. Standing in front of my great-grandfather’s home, where our family story began, was deeply emotional. To be in the very place where our roots were planted generations ago was both humbling and inspiring. Much of this unforgettable experience was made possible by the incredible efforts of Marco Cirulli, whose care and hospitality exceeded anything I could have imagined. Marco organized a beautiful welcome ceremony, joined us on every step of our tours, and—with the help of interpreter Tiziana Dicembre—helped us truly connect with the history and people of Schiavi. He also worked tirelessly to gather important historical documents that now hold a treasured place in my heart. We were also honored to be guided through the ruins and museum by Dr. Falasca Armando, who generously shared his knowledge and passion for the city’s heritage. He accompanied us on our city tours, enriching the experience with stories and insight that brought the past to life.

The Mayor of Schavi graciously attended the welcome ceremony and personally presented me with the historic documents related to our family—a gesture I will never forget.

This journey brought me closer not only to my great-grandfather’s origins but to a part of myself that I didn’t even realize had been missing. It reminded me how deeply place, memory, and legacy are woven into who we are.
